At least that’s what I’ve gathered from this guy’s YouTube Channel. Too much traffic, too many idiots, to many people honestly trying not to go crazy, and either getting excited or just plain making a mistake.

and this, ladies and gentes, is why you wear gear.

there will always be mistakes, but if you look at some of his other vids, there are a lot of QUICK riders ripping through there. def on my list of places to hit if I ever travel there

There will always be mistakes, but when the clean record of not screwing up when going for a spirited drive/ride is tarnished, it’s not as much fun to go back out and do the same thing again.

I don’t agree with this kind of driving/riding. Gear or not, how is this safe? What is the point of this kind of driving/riding? That guy just created a huge time suck for the driver of the Civic and narrowly avoided the SUV ahead of it. Props to both cars having a good reaction.

Yeah I should have just titled this “There is a reason racetracks don’t have two way traffic.”

Even after watching that in slow-motion, I still can’t tell how he lost it. I don’t see any sudden movements or extreme angles. Could it be that dark patch? It didn’t look dark enough to be oil...

EDIT: There’s a pretty detailed (and strongly upvoted) evaluation in the video’s comment section. Makes sense now.

It looked to me like the rear tire bounced maybe some debris on the road.

As in all things vehicular, Don’t over-drive the road, or your capabilities.

That was a case of dumbfuckness. Good thing he had all the gear on.

This is why you don’t drive fast on Mulholland Drive nor Tail of the Dragon. Too many idiotic daredevils. Just go at a safe pace, be vigilant, and have fun.

It looks to me like he was gradually turning more to cater for the tightening road, and turned too much.

This is one of the things that scares me about bikes. Lose a little traction and you’re nearly guaranteed to fall off the bike, at which point anything could happen. You could hit another car, you could cause another car to crash. People (not just you) could die.

I’m sure a skilled rider can get past these things. But it’s so easy to do when you’re not as skilled as that, and the vast majority of riders fit into that category. At least cars give you a buffer - if you unintentionally lose traction you’ve got a good chance of being okay.

What kind of bike do you ride? And for how long? It seems like a big-capacity motorbike with more than enough power to spin the wheels on you is dirt cheap. They can probably all spin the wheels - there’s only one wheel lol

I ride a SV650S with a GSX-R suspension swap. 5 years riding, am now a teacher on the weekends.

have a vid of one of my competitions :D finsihed 4th out of 50 riders

to spin the wheel: most sport bikes will hook up and loop out from under you before spinning the wheel if the tires are warm :D

I feel like they should have just jacked the car up at the front instead of pulling the rider out or the bike out. But then, I also am not under the impression that the collective IQ at the scene was particularly high. Civic driver left the car running for God’s sake...

I am a relative noob on an old motorcycle. I know I can do corners like that and not fall over. Sport bikes are notoriously hard edged. SOme better skill and more trianing could have prevented that.

Cycling gear does nothing to protect from road rash. Going down on pavement wearing nothing but lycra is guaranteed to hurt.

Kinja'd!!! PS9 > themanwithsauce - has as many vehicles as job titles

Kinja'd!!!0

And that right there is the problem. You know what happens when someone wrecks their car on Mulholland? And I don’t mean a little fender-bender, I mean a serious collision that completely destroys the vehicle? They get up, get out and walk away from it. On a bike here, one tiny miscalculation means you get to be eaten by a Civic, that had thankfully come to a stop immediately before the collision. The video featuring a car traveling just as quickly as the bike with a slightly less aware driver has a medieval ending for the rider.

Also, lets not pretend that skill and training can completely insulate a person from making a tiny miscalculation, because that’s what we do as human beings. If the folks who do nothing but race motorcycles for a living at a much higher skill level can’t avoid situations where they drop the bike, nobody can. Worse still, on public roads, you’re really only ever one casually unaware/incompetent driver away from total disaster. A lifetime of training and skill building can’t protect anyone from that.

Annnnnd that’s why you don’t ride like an idiot on the street. Sucks for the guy in the car having to deal with all that nonsense now.

So because you’re afraid of motorcycles, everyone should be? People have a lot more margin for surviving fuckups in a car, but let’s not pretend like that rider wasn’t trying to ride hard. Pretty serious lean angle for just a leisurely cruise IMO. Hell, if you drive in snow, you’re one ice patch away from being reamed by a semi truck. No training or 5 star safety rating will stop your car from getting crunched up by a kenworth.

Do you ride? Because if you did, you could see that what I said was truthful. I’m not saying it can’t/won’t happen to me. I speak from knowing situations where my bike communicated to me, the rider, that it wasn’t appreciating what was going on and was about to dump my dumb ass on the pavement if I didn’t fix it. I’ve taken similar corners just fine, repeatedly. And riders know and accept that.

I don’t see why I need to stay the hell away from my bike because other people won’t ride theirs safely or because you’re afraid of one.

So because you’re afraid of motorcycles, everyone should be?

No one said this.

Hell, if you drive in snow, you’re one ice patch away from being reamed by a semi truck.

Come on with that. A semi is not in position to crunch up your car 100% of the time you are driving it. It’s not at all analogous to the constant threat unaware motorists pose to riders.

I don’t see why I need to stay the hell away from my bike because other people won’t ride theirs safely or because you’re afraid of one.

Again; no one said this.

-You. To start this thread. You said it.

“A semi is not in position to crunch up your car 100% of the time you are driving it. It’s not at all analogous to the constant threat unaware motorists pose to riders.”

And you’re saying I can’t mitigate this through good choices? It is never eliminated, but like I said its like ice in the winter. I can limit my chances of being hit by unaware motorcyclists. Again, you’d understand if you tried to ride one. Ornhell, just be aware that there’s more to it than falling over and getting hit by a civic.

yuuuup. and road rash aint fun. I took a few good dives downhilling on a skateboard. Probably doing about 25/30mph. One time I was just wearing basketball shorts, and no shirt. I saw some gravel up ahead panicked and bailed, I was going A LOT faster than I could run however, and slammed after two or three steps. I had roadrash all over left, hand, elbow, hip, thigh, and my right knee, got it the worst. I even still have a pebble in my left hip, like a little memento. After that day I’m pretty sure I didn’t wear shorts for a few years.

Panic makes people real stupid. Thinking you just killed a dude with your new Si can cause a whole lot of panic.

Ouch. I bit it twice on my left side within two weeks. In the same spot on the road. Riding the same bike. Racing the same “friends” on the same route. Yeah, I wasn’t the brightest kid.

I also went over the bars once without gloves. I still have a piece of gravel embedded in my hand from that one. At least I didn’t hit my face. A pebble in the hand is a small price to pay to keep my good looks. At least that is what my wife says. I think she is biased.

Bikes are scary because when you crash, as you bail you have to worry about where the bike is. I once over cooked it mountain biking, single track, which by far my preferred type for cycling. I was on a down hill section, an hit a jump, mid air I realized I was going to fast. I had to toss the bike to the side and kind of jump over the bars at the same time. It actually worked out well lol. Thankfully my buddy behind me was paying attention, and giving me (the less experienced rider) lots or room, if not he would have probably crashed into me.

The worst pile ups are on the road. I’ve been lucky enough to avoid them so far, but I’ve been at the back of the pack when one happened. One tire overlapped another and all of the guys in front of me hit the pavement. Only two of us were unscathed.

My mountain bike crashes were usually benign, but I've been gouged by a rat trap pedal, badly skinned by the rough-cut wood from a missed bridges, and suffered a broken collar bone from a poorly managed jump.

I quit riding many years ago, two people in my union were killed in the last year. I think since daylight saving started I’ve heard of one or two motorcycle involved accidents every day on the way or coming home from work. My aunt was an ER nurse and she has very interesting stories. Honestly if you want to ride on track, fine, but you want to trust all those idiots out there?? I sure as hell don’t, is it worth it to the people who car about you?

My mom was an ER nurse as well. which is why I’m not allowed to have a motorcycle, even know that i’m 25 and live 2300 miles away haha. Its also why I grew up in a very gun free house hold. I wasn’t even allowed to have a bb gun.

It’s not even an Si. The poor guy was just driving up the road in his stock Civic. But you’re right, he definitely may have been in too much shock to think clearly.
